Everyone knows candles are decorative, can smell great, and can function as a source of light and heat. However, most people aren't aware that you can use candles to get certain results in your own life.

Colors play a huge role in this. For example, if you want a hot, romantic, passionate night with your partner, you will want to use red or orange candles, which are the colors of passion, to enhance the mood. Lighting a blue candle in the room would still provide some ambiance, but not as passionately as a red or orange candle would!

Pink is the color of love, and if you want to attract love in your life, you should burn pink candles. Pink is also the color of femininity and motherhood.

Yellow candles are great for energizing yourself! Yellow is a bright, happy color that encourages you to focus and energize.

Green candles symbolize money, and financial stability, as well as the home and hearth. If you want to bring money into your life, burning green candles will allow you to focus on this. They also are wonderful just for burning around the home to encourage a feeling of warmth and security.

Blue candles are wonderful for relaxation, serenity, healing, and emotional well-being. When you want to relax, light up a blue candle to encourage a feeling of wellness.

Purple is the color of intuition, prayer, and devotion. If you wish to meditate, or to use a candle when praying, the color purple is a good choice.

White candles are a symbol of purity (as when used in wedding ceremonies, etc.) and are good all-occasion candles. Black candles are good for ridding yourself of negativity, and bad habits.

Of course, scent plays a role in the use of candles for changes in your life as well. If you are a person who is highly sensitive or allergic to scents, an unscented candle is of course best. If you are not, however, fragrance can be a true enhancement to any candle, whether used symbolically or for aromatherapy purposes.

Fragrances that go well with red or orange candles, and enhance passion and energy are Jasmine, Cardamon, Cinnamon, Ylang-Ylang, Ginger, and Rose.

Great scents to go with pink candles for love are rose, jasmine, hyacinth, hibiscus, and rosewood.

Fragrances that work with yellow candles for energy are ginger, citrus scents (orange, lemon, grapefruit, etc.), and peppermint.

Scents to go with green candles for money or the home are basil, patchouli, and juniper, and many other "green" scents.

Fragrances used for serenity or healing to go with blue candles are very wide and varied. Some of those are lavender, chamomile, sandalwood, frankincense, lemongrass, cedarwood, and sage.

Scents for prayer and intuition really should depend on the individual, however many widely accepted fragrances for these are dragon's blood, frankincense & myrrh, sandalwood, cypress and spruce.

Family Christmas Traditions from Germany

German legend says that, on Christmas Eve, all the rivers turn to wine, the animals speak to each other and to humans, trees bear fruit, church bells ring from the sea, and gems pour forth from the mountains. Is it any wonder, then, that family Christmas traditions in Germany are bold, beautiful, and full of cheer? When Christmas, or Weihnachten as the Germans call it, rolls around in Germany, you'll find lots of beautiful decorations, delicious treats, and traditional stories to brighten the season.

The first part of December is traditionally reserved for solemn religious reflection. In years past, this quiet period lasted right up until Christmas itself. This time included a focus on reconnecting with your religion through reflection and fasting. Modern Germans, however, tends to use a slightly shorter period of time while still preserving the idea of concentrating on the religious aspects of the season..

The four weeks leading up to Christmas (usually beginning just before December first so as to include four Sundays before Christmas) is the Adventszeit or Advent season. Many German households include an Adventskran, or Advent wreath. This is a wreath of leaves with five candles, usually with four purple candles and one white. On each Sunday of Advent, one of the purple candles is lit. The white candle is traditionally lit around midnight on Christmas Eve to signal the birth of the Christ Child. Most families also have an Advent calendar for each child. There's a door on the calendar for each day from December 1st through 25th, and behind each door the child will find a small chocolate or toy. Many families open their doors just before bed, giving the children something to dream about in anticipation of the arrival of Christmas.

Children in Germany tend to honor both St. Nikolaus and the Christ Child in their traditions. On December 6th, families celebrate St. Nikolaus's Feast Day by placing their shoes by the fireplace. The children hope that St. Nikolaus will deem their behavior throughout the year as good enough to warrant treats of fruit, nuts, chocolates, candies, and marzipan instead of the coal and twigs his partner Knecht Ruprecht bestows upon naughty children. Many modern Germans now use a decorative item like a small wooden sleigh or shoe in place of actual shoes when waiting for the arrival of St. Nikolaus. After St. Nikolaus has come and gone, the children write letters to the Christkindl or the Christ Child, addressing them to his home in Himmelstadt.

According to many accounts, the Christmas tree that has become traditional throughout many parts of the world originated in Germany. Known as the Weihnachtsbaum to the Germans, the Christmas tree is traditionally a live fir or pine tree that is decorated with candles, marzipan, beautifully wrapped chocolates, hand-blown ornaments, and tinsel. Tradition dictates that the children of the family aren't allowed to see the Christmas tree until the Christmas bell rings on the night of Christmas Eve. Many families now keep the Christmas tree in a locked room for such a purpose, while others prefer to put their trees up on Christmas Eve evening.

On Christmas Eve, the German family traditionally starts their evening with a service at their church. When they return, one member of the family rings the Christmas bell, signaling the start of the Christmas celebration. The family then goes to the Christmas tree to open gifts. This tradition of opening gifts on Christmas Eve is different from many other Western countries, but remains true to this day. Different parts of Germany believe differently about who brings the gifts. In the northern part of the country, families traditionally believe that the Weihnachstmann or Christmas Man brings their gifts. In the southern part of the country, however, the Christkindl is who brings the gifts that everyone enjoys.

Then comes the Christmas feast. Different families partake of this feast at varying times; it can take place before the gift giving, after the gift giving, or even after the midnight Christmas church service. Regardless, the feast traditionally consists of a roasted goose or carp and lots of goodies. Some typical side dishes include Christstollen, which is a long loaf of bread stuffed with nuts and marzipan fruit; Lebkuchen, or gingerbread; marzipan fruits themselves; and Stollen, a fruit-filled bread. The feast is usually ended with plates of cookies and chocolates to bring a proper end to the celebration.

Christmas Day itself is spent with family and friends and usually includes time for religious activities. The Christmas season doesn't traditionally end, however, until January 6th. This day was traditionally used to celebrate the birth of Christ, and is still used today as the Feast of the Epiphany or Heilige Drei Könige. This day celebrates the three wise men, and their initials along with the year are written in chalk above the doors of German homes to protect the family throughout the year.

Germany is the source of many Western Christmas traditions. While maintaining their own unique intricacies, Germans have shared their traditions throughout the world and can be looked to for wonderful ideas on how you can start your own family Christmas traditions. Maybe this year, your family can participate in the celebration of the Advent with a beautiful calendar filled with chocolates, or decorate your tree with marzipan and cookies. Christmas Wreaths: History, Tradition, and Uses

Evergreen wreaths at Christmas time are a familiar sight on doors, above fireplaces, and on homes.  Wreaths have been in use for many hundreds of years, even before the birth of Christ.  Many historians believe that the first wreaths date back to the Persian Empire, when royalty and members of the upper class wore diadems, or fabric headbands adorned with jewels.  Other cultures would later become fascinated with this tradition, picking it up and adapting it for themselves.

About 800 years before the birth of Christ, Greeks began to recognize the winners of their Olympic games by crowning them with wreaths made of laurel tree branches.  Years later, when the games moved from city to city, branches from local trees were used to make these victory wreaths for the winners.  During the Roman Empire, military and political leaders wore crowns of leaves and greenery.  For example, Julius Caesar was crowned with a wreath made of fresh laurel branches and leaves.  The transition of the wreath from a head adornment to a wall decoration is believed to have occurred when athletes (or perhaps victorious military leaders) returned home, and they would hang their headbands on their walls or doors, as a trophy of their victory.

The Egyptian, Chinese, and Hebrew cultures were known to have used evergreen branches as a symbol of eternal life, because the conifer trees stayed green throughout the winter months.  After the birth of Christ, the Christmas wreath made of evergreen branches came to symbolize the triumph of life over the long winter months.

The Advent wreath also became a popular holiday tradition after the birth of Christ.  This decoration was usually placed flat on a table and was used to count down the four weeks immediately preceding Christmas.  Traditionally the wreath was constructed with four candles in a circle and one candle in the middle.  The four outside candles were purple or violet, and the center candle was white.  Four weeks before Christmas, the first violet candle would be lit.  The following week, an additional candle would be lit, and so on, until the white center candle is lit on Christmas Eve or day, signifying the arrival of Christ.  A brief prayer was said to accompany the lighting of each candle.  The reason for the final candle being located in the center is to symbolize that we should keep Christ at the center of our lives and the center of the Christmas celebration.

Based on drawings and paintings, most historians believe that the use of evergreen wreaths at Christmas time spread across Northern Europe, Spain, and Italy during the early 19th century.  The greenery was used as a symbol of life persevering through the cold winter months, and the holly berries that were often used as an adornment were a symbol of the blood of Christ.

It is also believed that Europeans also used wreaths on their doors to represent their family identity, much like a family crest.  These wreaths were made from products grown in their own gardens, such as grapevines, fresh flowers, or other produce.  The crafting of these wreaths was a family ritual that followed the same general pattern year after year.

Today, wreaths are still widely used around the world.  In the U.S., wreaths are a traditional decoration for Christmas, as well as many other holidays throughout the year.  Wreaths now adorn doors for Halloween, Valentine's Day, the Fourth of July, and Easter.  Furthermore, wreaths are no longer limited to only evergreen branches.  Many craft stores, books, and television shows feature unique wreaths made of a variety of unusual materials and decorations for almost any occasion.

Love Spells and Self Esteem

One of the most common questions that I hear is something along the lines of, "Is there a way / spell that will make someone want to be with me / love me?"
Well, the short answer is, "No - there is not."

One of the core precepts of the Wiccan faith is to harm no other. If you are weaving spells or intoning rituals which are meant to sway the minds of others, then you are by definition harming them.

Free will is one of the most precious gifts we have been granted. Spells and rituals that are designed to infringe upon that free will and force others to do things by your design, instead of in accord with their own will, steals that most precious of gift from them.

In addition, whatever feelings or desires that they manifested for you would never be real or honest, but would instead simply be the manifestation of the magics. Would you really want to be with someone under those circumstances? Never really knowing if their feelings for you were genuine - or simply the product of magic?

So, in this particular case, my best advice to you is to take the time and put in the effort to do things the old fashioned way. After all, anything really worth doing is certainly worth doing right. If it is meant to be, then there is no need to rush or hurry things - and you will be much happier in the long term from having not done something you would likely regret.

However, all of that being said, there is no reason that you cannot seek to improve certain things about yourself in order to make you more attractive and desirable to those around you. And well, without question, one of the most desirable traits that a person can possess is a well deserved sense of self-confidence and self-esteem.

To that end, here is a spell that I have found to be very helpful in bolstering both of those qualities....


A Spell to Encourage Self Esteem

Lacking that happy knack of making friends easily? If you are asked to a party, do you stand around like the proverbial wallflower while everyone else is engaged in happy conversations and the sound of everybody else's laughter fills the room? Or maybe your career is stuck in a rut and you see no way to make that break for yourself to get ahead? If you think, "That's me!" about any of these, then maybe the answer lies in a lack of self-esteem and the following will help:

You will need:

A bath

Lavender essential oil

Jasmine essential oil

An essential oil burner

Seven green oak leaves (Basil can be used if oak is out of season)

One purple candle

One yellow candle

Purple thread

An envelope

First, start a warm bath running and drizzle some of the lavender oil into the water.

Next light both candles and sit them near the bath.

Float the leaves in the bath and climb in.

Breathe in through your nose and hold it for a count of seven. Breathe out through your mouth for a seven count. Repeat this process six more times.

As you breathe in, visualize your lungs filling up with warm, golden light. As you breathe out, see your frustrations in your breath and watch your anger, pain, and all of the other barriers that stand in your way float away with each exhalation.

Now, totally relaxed and at ease with yourself, visualize a spot of golden light above you. Watch it get bigger and bigger before it floats down and your body is enveloped in its warm glow.

At this point, repeat the following:

"I have a contribution to make.

I have words to say.

Let others hear the words I speak.

And take self-doubt away.

And let it be done, that it harm no one."

Repeat these words six more times before leaving the bath and snuffing the candles.

Thread the oak leaves onto the string and then hold them up to the light and repeat the previous verse one last time.

Fold the leaves into the envelope and place the envelope into your handbag or wallet.
End the ritual by burning the jasmine oil in the burner and letting the scent of it waft over you, removing any last traces of self-doubt.

Christmas Advent Candle Holders

Materials & tools:
4” x 4” wooden fence posts (two 30 cm high, and two 25 cm high)

Newspapers

Saw

Pencil and a ruler

Vise, drill and 1-1/4” diameter drill bit, spade bit

Electric sander and medium to fine grit sandpaper

Tack cloth

Pre-stain by Minwax and a sponge brush

Minwax PolyShades (one-step stain & finish all in one) in colour of your choice (I used Natural Cherry gloss 390/490)

High-quality natural bristle brush

Tealight candles, 3 purple, 1 pink, 4 white

Making block advent candle holders is a clever way to utilize pieces of wood leftover from other projects, such as last summer’s new deck or fence. Wooden posts are cut to size, and holes are drilled for the candles. Minwax PolyShades was applied to add rich colour with a durable protection while enhancing the wood grain — all in a single step. These modern-style candle holders can used year round.

Advent is a term for the period that begins on the Sunday nearest November 30 and lasts until Christmas. The word advent is derived from the Latin word “adventus” meaning “to come”. The four advent candles symbolize the four weeks of advent. Typically, the purple candles symbolize joy, peace and love, and are lit on the first, second and fourth Sunday of advent. The pink candle symbolizes hope and is lit on the third Sunday. At midnight on Christmas Eve, the candles are replaced by white candles. Theses candle are used until the Epiphany. This tradition has long been practiced by several religious faiths. Families set up advent candles arranged in or around a wreath that is either set on a table or suspended from the ceiling. The circle wreath is a symbol of eternity and life, and the candles are the light of the world.

Measure and cut with a saw four wooden blocks in the sizes indicated above, or to any other size, as there are no rules for the height of advent candle holders, just as long as there are four. Traditionally, they are all the same size, but there is no set rule. I just decided to give these wooden holders a modern look.

On the top face of each of the blocks, draw an X (from each corner) with a pencil and a ruler to find and mark the centre.

Secure the wooden block in a vise, then drill a 1-1/4” diameter hole, as deep as the tealight candle cup, in the centre of it. Stop and check if the tealight fits, then continue drilling if needed to adjust the depth. Repeat steps for each holder.

Sand the wooden blocks until smooth. Start with the medium grit sandpaper and finish with the fine grit sandpaper. Dust off with a tack cloth.

For uniform staining, first apply a coat of pre-stain to each candle holder. Let dry about 10 minutes. Apply a light coat (to avoid drip marks) of the one-step stain in your choice of colour to each of the candle holders. Let each coat dry for eight hours before recoating. Normally, at least two coats are needed for an even and polished finish, but additional coats may be applied for richer colour. I applied four coats, one in the morning and one in the evening over a two-day period. To avoid drip marks, after each coat application, wait five minutes and use upward strokes with the paintbrush around the top edges of the holders.

Once the stain is dry, insert a tealight candle into each of the candle holders.

Adorn with festive beaded wire if desired and let the count down to the holidays begin. The holders will look simply majestic when displayed in a row on a buffet, down the centre of a table or gracing a mantel, or placed inside a large wreath. Light one candle each Sunday, an additional one the next Sunday, and so on until Christmas.

Variations:

To make Hanukkah candle holders, cut eight wooden holders in the same size and height. Cut a ninth (and centre, the Shamas) holder taller. Stain blue, paint silver, or decorate with gold leaf accents, such as Stars of David.

To use tapered candles, simply drill a smaller hole at the other end of the wooden block, then turn them over to use different size candles.

No need to clean your paintbrush between each coat; simply kept it sealed in Glad® Press’n Seal™ wrap.
